The International Labour Organization (ILO) has adopted the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (MLC 2006). A Maritime Labour Certificate (MLC) and a Declaration of Maritime Labour Compliance (DMLC) will be required to ensure compliance with the Convention for all ships above 500 tons in international trade, unless otherwise instructed by the Flagged State.

What are the working hours on a yacht?

The maximum is 14 hours work in 24 hours or 72 hours in 7 days. The minimum rest time is 10 hours in 24 hours or 77 hours in 7 days. Be prepared for long and unusual hours during peak seasons as yachting operates 24/7.

How much do yacht crew earn?

Salaries depend on many factors including yacht size, usage, experience, skills, and qualifications. A deckhand on a mid-size private yacht may earn around €2,500-3,000 per month, while a captain on a large charter yacht could earn €12,000+ per month. What should I pack?

Pack very lightly as cabin space is limited. All uniforms, shoes, toiletries etc will be provided.

How long will it take to find my first job?

It varies from a few weeks to a couple of months. Do research on peak hiring seasons, get credentials in order, register with recruitment agencies, and leverage any contacts you have. Persistence is important as breaking in can be challenging.

What is the minimum age and are there restrictions?

The minimum age is 16 years old. Those under 18 are restricted from overnight work defined as 9+ hours between midnight and 5am. No one below the minimum age may be employed.

They exist but are rare. Focus on individual roles first, but tell recruiters you’re interested in couple roles.

What's the interview dress code?

Smart casual yacht crew style – polos, shorts/skirts/pants, boating shoes. Avoid flashy jewelry.

Do I need other languages?

English is the main language, others are a bonus. Key yachting cities are English-friendly.

How long are contracts?

Seasonal roles are 3-6 months. Senior roles tend to be permanent long-term contracts.
