What the job involves
- Wash, polish and maintain the exterior of the yacht
- Drive and maintain the tenders and toys, and set them up for guests
- Handle lines and fenders when docking and at anchor
- Keep watch and take part in safety drills
What you need
- STCW Basic Safety Training and a valid ENG1 seafarer medical certificate, which almost every yacht requires before you start
- A powerboat licence such as PYA or RYA Powerboat Level 2 is valued for tender driving
- Previous yacht or marine experience for anything beyond a junior role
Deckhands move up to lead deckhand and bosun, then study for Officer of the Watch certificates to become a mate and eventually captain.
